Oru Pakka Kathai is constantly intriguing, full of dead humor and believable characters, who live in a world that is very much alive. As he showed with Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kanom, the director gives us comedy to come out of critical situations. Like when Sarah goes to Meera’s house after getting pregnant, it becomes melodrama for a moment! Directors avoid explaining things through dialogues, the characters on every line are very measured. Even another sweet moment discussing the possibility of marriage to parents of young people is treated with perceived humor. The director has captured the strangeness that makes the characters feel with making the actors’ eyes everywhere but towards the person they’re talking to. No man can bring himself up to pronounce the word sex. Even the scenes in which Meera and Sara try to realize pregnancy are full of humor. And Govind Vasanta’s (credited here as Govind Menon) music adds tension. These scenes are proof that the play can be thrilling and suspenseful.
But then, the personal story of a young couple turns into a larger story on faith and superstition. Suddenly, this Oru Pakka Kathai starts to feel like an endless dance, with dark humor leaving the story, and indecision to end this story about ordinary people trapped in an extraordinary situation . Even the couple reunite for background at one point. This tonal change brings the story down a notch, as the goalpost changes to send the message. To his credit, the director tries to avoid making it seem overbearing, but by the time we are given a judge’s verdict, we realize that we have come a long way from intimate drama , Which the early parts promised.
